I am a devote Christian although my religion is expressed in ways that would possibly confuse any church. Yesterday I came across a passage in the book that I was reading (Terry Pratchett, Good Omens - Brilliant!). Anyway, the thought was this:
If we stopped telling people that everything would be sorted after they died, maybe they would pay more attention to what is happening in this life. After all, God did not give us this life for naught. Maybe He should re-install the long-livity system, where everyone would live as long as Metuselah, then they would think more carefully about what they do today because they would be here to face the consequences tomorrow.
I have found this to be so true. Most people (and shamefully, especially Christians) fail to honour their very 1st chore given to them - take care of the earth. Everyone is always struggling to make their life better and they often overlook the consequences that their children will have to face. I have found that most people's answer when confronted is that 'it's ok - I won't be here by that time'. Very few people actually realise that 'that time' could be the next 5 years.
I am so very often ashamed of how we can plan for when we are 50 or 60, or for when our children want to go study or want to get married, but we hardly ever plan for the future world that our children will have to live in or the battles they will have to fight because of our total lack of vision (I use 'our' in a very broad sense meaning the lager part of humanity - I know there are people who care).
I have found the truth in Albert Einstein's quote:
"Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the the universe."
